Pearl restringing is one of those things that people put off longer than they should. The cord looks fine, the clasp still closes, the pearls are not going anywhere. Then one day the cord breaks and a pearl rolls under the sofa. Restringing is not expensive and it is not complicated, but the timing matters.
How long does silk cord last ¶
Natural silk cord stretches and weakens with wear. For a strand worn regularly, two to three years is a reasonable interval between restrings. For a strand worn occasionally, five years is probably the outer limit. The cord absorbs skin oils, sweat, and moisture, which weaken the fibres over time. A cord that looks intact can still be significantly weakened internally.
Signs that restringing is overdue ¶
The clearest sign is visible gaps between the knots. When the cord stretches, the knots move apart and the pearls can slide along the cord. A second sign is a cord that looks grey, limp, or discoloured. A third sign is a clasp that no longer closes cleanly, which sometimes indicates that the cord has stretched at the clasp end. If you see any of these, it is time.
What we check when a strand arrives ¶
When a strand arrives at the studio, we photograph it and examine each pearl individually. We check for chips, cracks in the nacre, and widened drill holes. We check the clasp for fatigue and secure closure. We write up a condition report and send it to you before any work begins. If we find something significant, you decide how to proceed. We do not start work without your approval.
The restringing process ¶
We restring on natural silk, choosing a cord diameter that matches the drill hole. We tie a knot between each pearl. For a standard 18-inch strand, this takes about three hours. We use a French wire at the clasp ends to protect the cord from metal wear. When the strand is finished, we photograph it and return it by insured post with both sets of photographs.
What it costs ¶
A straightforward restring on a standard strand starts at £65. If the clasp needs replacing, we will quote separately. If we find damage to the pearls that requires attention, we will discuss options before proceeding. We do not charge for the condition report or for the return photographs. International restringing requests are welcome; we will confirm shipping costs before you send the piece.
To send a strand for restringing, post it by insured mail to 14 Maltby Street, Bermondsey, London SE1 3PA, or bring it in by appointment. Email hello@drimanopearl.com first if you have questions.
